Eco Driving: Significantly reduce fuel consumption
Shifting effecticvely to maximize fuel consumption

As fuel prices continue to rise it becomes more important than ever to learn how to conserve energy and manage the cost of driving. Eco-Driving or "fuel efficient driving" is a means to significantly reduce fuel consumption saving energy and money. It also is a way to minimize environmental impact caused by driving lowering CO2 emissions through enhanced driving control.

In 1997 in Finland Eco-Driving programs were first created to help train experienced drivers to adjust their personal driving habits to be more aligned with current automotive technologies, taking full advantage of electronic and mechanical systems to reduce fuel consumption by up to 12-15% on average. By slightly altering driving style and understanding the most effective driving in relation to the automotive technology, drivers realized the benefits of more effective automotive handling and how to drive to maximize the most mileage. Eco-Driving programs have sinced been implemented in Sweden and Norway and are now emerging in American and European driving instruction courses due to their success in teaching greater automotive control, decreasing accident rates and helping drivers reduce fuel consumption.

Here are some tips to put to good use:

  • Shift up as soon as possible
Shift up between 2.000 and 2.500 revolutions.
  • Maintain a steady speed
Use the highest gear possible and drive with low engine RPM.
  • Anticipate traffic flow
Look ahead as far as possible and anticipate surrounding traffic, utilizing on-board computers and dynamic navigators. Avoid slamming on the brakes suddenly or accelerating rapidly.
  • Decelerate smoothly
When you have to slow down or to stop, decelerate smoothly by releasing the accelerator in time, leaving the car in gear.
  • Check the tire pressure frequently
Low tire pressure, 25% less than manufacturer specifications, increases rolling resistance by 10% and your fuel consumption by 2%.
  • Get rid of surplus weight in the trunk and unused roof racks
